I made Buddha at a time when I was suffering dreadfully with freeform anxiety.

Originally I intended him to sit in the Garden, as there was a neighbours’ dog who used to bark incessantly and I thought that he would help me “Be” with the discomfort.

As a girl of Thirteen I went with my parents regularly to the Study Society in Hammersmith where we learned Transcendental Meditation and about Gurdjieff and Turning and Buddha and I met the Maharishi.

The Eastern Religions had really taken the Free thinking sixties by storm at this time (my parents were a little old and I too young).

I think in retrospect I can see how my experience of “Religion” which can have such a terrible reputation for constraint and narrow-mindedness was the opposite end of the spectrum, and instead was this glorious multicoloured experience of possibility and difference. All of these experiences though, seemed to encompass the same basic tenant, which I to this day still hold dear that there is some greater presence  than ourselves.

Buddha is hand built in concrete on a wire and aluminium frame and the mosaics are the pieces of broken family china each piece with its own story of time and place .
